How do I use the files available on this site?

The files available for download here are in GPX format.  This is an enhanced XML format used for GPS-related information.  The best way to view, edit, sort, or search these files is with a program called GSAK.  GSAK is used by geocachers for storing the locations of geocaches and loading that information into handheld GPS units.

If there's enough demand, I may provide the data in other formats, such as a comma separated text format that can be used by a wider range of applications.

What is GSAK?

GSAK, also known as the Geocaching Swiss Army Knife, is a waypoint management database.  It's the program that I use to keep track of all the waypoints listed on this site.  I also use it to generate some of the HTML web pages you see here.  GSAK is a shareware program that costs $25, but I find it invaluable for organizing location-based information.  GSAK makes it easy to store and edit waypoints and provides a means to load waypoints into a handheld GPS unit for easy navigation.  It's available from www.gsak.net.

What is a Waypoint?

A Waypoint, in GPS terminology, is simply a set of coordinates that mark a particular location.  When you "mark a waypoint" on a GPS, you're saving the latitude and longitude of your location so you can navigate or refer back to it later.
